Don’t fret if you don’t know how to surf because learning is the best part of surfing! Just wait until the infectious smiles take over after you ride your first wave!
The Formula
Our goal is to travel abroad in a manner that nourishes one’s soul with a special sauce found no where else. It follows the following three axioms.
Intimate immersion abroad shatters assumptions, perspectives and paradigms.
Extreme challenge flushes out the mind, hence allowing clarity to creep in (reflection and understanding).
Sorting out basics for shelter, food and water on the trail in foreign cultures, speaking the local language requires humility.
1+2+3= Nourishment of the Soul
It is Self-Evolution, The Next Level and an Adventure of a Lifetime…you go home shining bright with a twinkle in your eye.
There is something to be said about lazily waking up in the morning with the Howler monkeys grunting outside your door, packing your things up with great care and thought, savoring that cup of coffee the Argentinean hostel owner made for you while confirming your heading not with a map, but with a foreign language, a smile and new friends.
Now that you’ve traveled for a week or more, you already have learned to toss expectations out the door, you’ve grown up a bit, realized your wound up way to tight and this is your time to live in the moment; which is right now. With this attitude, the moments serve up what you never expected…
The day is blessed with spectacular views that are accompanied with random moments of coolness, like a butterfly who befriends you for a few seconds while grinding out your 5th hour to the summit through the “known” smuggler routes that border Costa Rica and Nicaragua. Your head is on a swivel and when you see the two men sporting machetes watching you pass by…you know what to do if they slide down to confront you. It may happen, you don’t know…but you are prepared, ready…and know how to read the situation.
For the first time in your life you start to notice the little things. You notice how the dirt crunches under your tires beneath you and how free you feel. You quickly forget about the two men, but are aware of everything…you are in a zone, it’s peaceful, quiet and there is no way you’re giving up.

After the summit and a thrilling thirty minute downhill, the tone changes quickly. You drop into a valley with a lake and see your guide springing back flips into the water. Then, he busts a back flip that went all wrong and side plants….ouch! You hear his cackling mixed with moans of pain after he surfaces to the water…you can’t pedal fast enough…you lock that rear brake and power slide it in…jump off the bike, shred the pack and jump in…the rush of cool water upon your body and face is exhilarating and for the first time in a long time….you feel ALIVE. You pop out of the water with a big, “Yahoo! Yeah!!!!!!”
You are different than the person you were that morning, because you just gave yourself something your soul has been longing for. Nourishment.
The group assembles to find shelter, you find food and have a beer with your new friends…appreciating life with laughs and stories from the day’s ride. A thought flashes through your head, you ponder a friend or maybe a family member…you make a mental note or even write it down. It’s just another change in your life to be made when you return home…add it to the list.
Yes, this is how it is when you immerse yourself abroad, when you practice courage and travel FREE2B.
